Each of these US students is from a family that came to the States relatively recently; their grandparents still live abroad. Use the map here to help you figure out what language each student's grandparents still speak.

Look once more at the presentation of languages spoken in different countries and answer the following questions:

1. To say that in a country X language "is spoken" Russian uses the verb говор- without a pronoun. Which form of the verb is used?

2. When saying that one speaks these languages, the phrase for the language is spelled as follows (Check the dialog if you need to then mouse over the blanks to check your answers):

Оле́г говори́т п__ - ру́сск__.

Ама́нда говори́т по-кита́__с__и.

3. All the forms in #2 (above) begin with по- and end in (select one):

Choose an appropriate ending to each sentence to reflect Tony's and Oleg's conversation about languages.

Listen to the sentences below, which are about Tony's and Oleg's knowledge of languages. As you listen notice which verbs use a two-word adjective + noun phrase to indicate the language ("ру́сский язы́к", "неме́цкий язы́к") and which use instead a one-word form starting with "по-" ("по-ру́сски", "по-испа́нски"). Listen and select the column that applies to each verb, then on the right indicate whether the sentence is true or false.
